Common Orthodontic Emergencies and how to resolve them

1. Broken bracket or wire:
If a bracket or wire breaks or comes loose, it may cause discomfort, pain, or irritation to your gums. If possible, safely trim any loose or sharp ends with a nail clipper. For temporary relief, apply wax to any sharp edges. Be sure to contact our office to schedule an appointment for repair or replacement of the broken bracket or wire.
2. Pain or soreness after adjustment:
It’s normal to experience some pain or soreness after your orthodontic adjustment. This is temporary and typically lasts between 24 to 72 hours, depending on the type of adjustment. You can take over-the-counter pain medication to help manage discomfort during the first few days. If the pain persists longer, please contact our office for further advice.
3. Sores or Ulcers:
This discomfort may be caused by new braces or if a wire shifts and becomes too long on one side. For temporary relief, apply orthodontic wax over the affected braces. Rinse with warm saltwater twice daily to help reduce inflammation and promote healing. If the irritation or sores persist, please contact our office.
4. Missing rubber bands/colors or broken chains:
These are essential for holding the wire in place within the brackets. If a rubber band, color, or chain is lost or broken, please contact our office to schedule an appointment for a replacement.
5. Broken retainers:
Retainers are essential for preserving the results of your orthodontic treatment. If you notice any cracks, breakage, or if your retainers no longer fit properly, please contact our office right away to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist. DO NOT wait until your next scheduled visit, as this could result in your teeth shifting.
